Two elements of the relief decoration of the column are potentially useful as dating tools: clearly historical scenes in the frieze, and the presence or absence of Commodus in the overall decoration. The rationale behind each is simple: if it were possible to determine what time period is represented by the images on the column, whether the main helical frieze or the pedestal relief, it would be possible to use this to help date the monument.
