It reflected a basic, mistaken view that “Africans were Africans”; tribal divisions and conflicts were ignored. The new settlers often did not get along with the natives, yet the majority of the power for the territory was theirs.

OUTPOSTS ON THE RIVER The presence of European trading posts along the West African coast dramatically altered the development of life there. As more and more trade and commerce revolved around the trading posts, their locations became the centers of power in the region. Towns grew up around the trading posts, populated by those who were increasingly dependent on the traders for their livelihood. Violence was an unpleasant fact in these towns, as rival merchants or Africans, or both, attacked a trading post to seize its goods or take over its position on the coast.
